Lécera

Lecera is built on the flat steppe land of the Campo de Belchite Region. Its vine-growing tradition precedes it and the fact is that this rough land of the municipality and its extreme weather conditions favour the cultivation of the Garnacha plant, whose vines offer red wines with an intense colour and flavour.  Famous wines that have taken the name of this municipality to other territories. And together with its wines, the Jota. Lecera has produced important Jota singers such as Jesus Gracia.

The streets of this municipality house nooks and crannies that tell of its history. Noble shields attached to the façades of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, typically Aragonese style palaces and ancestral homes. And among the outstanding religious buildings of Lecera, we encounter the parish church of Santa Maria Magdalena, originally built in Gothic-Mudejar style, but reformed in Baroque style. This is the case of its slim tower, a copy of the Mudejar style, but raised taking advantage of the agricultural prosperity of the 18thcentury. We can see another example of religious building in the Santo Domingo hermitage, which, from a small hillock, several metres from the municipality, watches over and protects its residents.

The harshness of the Lecera countryside has had a lot to do with the strong character of the residents of this municipality. We can find proof of this in the pilgrimage to the Estercuel Monastery, a tradition that is currently being recuperated, and whose origin is unknown, but which runs along a rugged path for 50 kilometres.
