Valmadrid

En la parte más septentrional de Campo de Belchite, junto a la capital aragonesa, se encuentra este municipio tranquilo y de escasa densidad poblacional que da la bienvenida a la comarca.

In the most northern part of Campo de Belchite, next to the Aragonese capital, we find Valmadrid, a quiet municipality with low population density, which welcomes visitors to the region.

The town sits on the side of a small elongated hillock, resulting in a peculiar map of streets that go up to the most important artistic and historic ensemble of the municipality, comprised of the remains of a castle and the late Gothic style church, built in the 16th century. Along its streets, visitors will find stately homes, with shields on the façades, alongside other popular style houses.

And if the surrounding land is mainly steppe, Valmadrid has been considered to be the green lung of the region with its extensive pine grove, which unfortunately was food for the flames in summer 2009.

The Utrillas train used to run through its whitish and brownish-grey steppe lands and today the track layouts are still visible.   Today, they are used as hiking routes that run through gorges and have such interesting points of interest as the Valdespartera tunnel, which the Utrillas train used to pass through on its way from Puebla de Alborton to Valmadrid. The “Desertica Extrema” of Belchite is worth a mention, a massively attended race that starts in Valmadrid, passes through La Puebla de Alborton and ends in Belchite.
