Archbishop Apaolaza

He was a notable Aragonese religious person. Born in Moyuela in 1567 he studied at the University of Zaragoza, achieving a Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree and finally a PhD in Theology. He was a representative of the Kingdom of Aragon, Bishop of Barbastro, Bishop of Albarracin and in 1633 he was raised to the post of Bishop of Teruel. In 1635, he took over the Archbishopric of Zaragoza. As the Bishop of Zaragoza, he carried out numerous restorations including the altarpiece of Ntra. Sra. de la Blanca of La Seo cathedral in Zaragoza. He was a devout follower of the Holy “Virgen del Pilar”, and on 27 April 1641 he was responsible for pronouncing the declamatory judgement of the miracle, which took place in the General Hospital of Zaragoza, of the restoration of the amputated right leg of Miguel Juan Pellicer, born in the Town of Calanda, due to the intercession of Holy Mary of El Pilar. He died in the house of Juan de Torres, located in D. Juan de Aragon street, on 21 June 1643. His remains were firstly laid to rest in the Chapel of La Seo but later they were taken in 1644 to a tomb situated in the Church of Ntra. Sra. de la Piedad of the town where he was born. A street has been named after him in Moyuela and another in the city of Zaragoza.
