HERMITAGE OF OUR LADY DE LOS DOLORES

Wandering through the winding streets of Almonacid de la Cuba, and as a testimony of its Moslem past, visitors will find, in the expansion area of the Calle Mayor, one of the most curious buildings of the municipality.  This is the Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, a Baroque style building. As if it were slotted between two streets, the hermitage, with great verticality, welcomes tourists with a doorway decorated with semicircular arch and flanked by pillars. The interior is surprising because of its small size, which contrasts with the pronounced verticality of the temple, in a desire to help the faithful search for spirituality. It is a building with trefoil ground plan, comprised of a square ground plan transept, flanked by three semi-circular ground plan chapels. At the foot, a nave with one single section. And enclosing the entire space, half-domes, wedges and lunettes and an octagonal dome with spandrels in the transept.
