Considered as “The Father of Modern Art” he was a painter and etcher born in Fuendetodos in 1746 and he stood out for his mural and easel paintings, etching and drawing. His most famous works were the Self-portrait, the two Majas, the Nude and the Attired, the Etchings Series of the Disasters of Ware and of the Caprices, the Blind Hen, the Charge of the Mamluks, the Executions of May 3rd, the Frescoes of San Antonio de la Florida, and the series of black paintings, especially El Aquelarre, the Pilgrimage of San Isidro and Saturn devouring a son. After living in Zaragoza, Madrid and Italy, he died in Bordeaux in 1828.  His mortal remains have rested since 1919 under the frescoes of the Madrid hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida painted by him in 1798.  Many streets, squares, schools, museums, etc. have been named in his honour.
