ETCHING MUSEUM

Goya would have become part of the History of Art, occupying a special place, simply with his graphic work, in other words, his etchings. The painter from Fuendetodos gave his very best, with maximum freedom, which once again made him completely different to all the other etching artists of his time.

Goya, on the other hand. for whom etching began as a simple distraction for a convalescent and a way to learn from his master (Velazquez), soon realised the creative possibilities of etching, so with time it became the ideal vehicle to give free rein to his most personal and subjective world without any obstacles in terms of technique or content.

Located a few metres from the house where Goya was born, this museum opened its doors in the month of April 1989 and here visitors can see the four series of etchings (“Caprichos” - Caprices, “Desastres” - Disasters, “Tauromaquia” - Tauromachia and “Disparates” – Follies).

The Caprices are located on the second floor of this museum. This is a collection of 80 prints. In this series, Goya criticises the vices and bad habits of the time. His criticism was so scathing that he only had the series up for sale for a few days because he feared possible reprisals. However, thanks to these prints he was recognised as a great etcher and artist in France.

The Disasters of War. These can be seen on the first floor and show an innovative perspective, the topic of war, but from a different viewpoint, where anonymous men and women play a leading role, as they are the ones who suffer and experience the horrors.

Tauromachia. This series can be enjoyed on the first floor. Here we can see one of his favourite topics and one of the most popular and controversial diversions of his time: bulls. All of them from a very particular viewpoint: Circus and blood.

The Follies are also on the first floor. This is the most enigmatic series and also the most difficult to interpret. The images are scarcely comprehensible, dramatic, dark and grotesque where the personal, oneiric and obsessive traits of the author flourish mysteriously and majestically, with subjective dimensions and genuine surrealism.
