Campo de Belchite is a highly valued territory by ornithologists all over the world who come to this steppe land in search of these elusive birds. Thanks to the work that SEO/Birdlife has been developing for years, in the El Planeron Ornithological Reserve, these lands have become a well-known destination among bird lovers. Here we can find abundance, diversity and ease to watch steppe birds, thus making this place perfect to carry out this activity.
The DuPont’s lark is the main attraction, but other species can be observed such as the black-bellied sandgrouse, pin-tailed sandgrouse, Calandra lark, lesser short-toed lark, black-eared wheater, Thekla or common lark and the Stone Curlew. The rock and forest birds of prey are another group of interesting birds that can be seen in the different parts of the region.
In places such as Fuente Piñispera and the Cucutas, both in Lecera, the small canyons of Fuendetodos, the Peñicas de Azuara or the Pozo de los Chorros in Belchite, species such as the griffon vulture, golden eagle, milvus, peregrine falcon, royal owl, common kestrel or Egyptian vulture can be found.
In Lecera, from the observatory installed next to the rubbish dump, we can see quite an amazing sight, as hundreds of vultures gather around the waste that is regularly supplied from the town’s slaughterhouse.
