1ST CENTURY ROMAN DAM

La Cuba, as the Roman dam of Almonacid is popularly known, was one of the three dams that regulated the Aguasvivas River. It has been very well preserved and was declared an asset of cultural interest by the Government of Aragon.  it is 34 m. high and was, according to documents, the highest of the Roman empire. It dates from the 1st Century but underwent successive modifications until it reached its current aspect, which it adopted in the following century. It is 120 metres long, 34 metres high and 27 metres wide, giving it a capacity of 6 Hm3. It was mainly used for agricultural purposes, but it was also used to supply the town. From the 3rd century onwards, it was abandoned, until Moslem times, when it was used as a weir, a function that it maintains today.
