La Lomaza de Belchite wildlife refuge

Located in one of the only steppe landscapes in Europe, it is a Wildlife Refuge, declared  LIC (place of community importance), ZEPA (Special bird protection area) and included in the Natura 2000 network.  Due to the lack of rainfall and the dryness of the terrain in its 961 protected hectares, of considerable landscape beauty, the esparto grass, thyme, rosemary, cotton lavender and shepherd’s purse prevail. Noteworthy is the considerable presence of steppe birds such as the stone curlew, DuPont’s lark, calandra lark, black-bellied sandgrouse, greater short-toed lark and lesser short-toed lark as well as thekla lark, among others, which make it a perfect spot for bird-watching.

It can be reached from the A-222 road, it has a car park, explanatory boards and a signposted itinerary that departs from this point. To enter the refuge, permission must be requested first from the Aragonese Environmental Management Institute (INAGA).
