LA MALENA ROMAN VILLA

Discovered in 1986 whilst carrying out farming work, it is situated about 2 kilometres from the centre of Azuara and it has an extension of around 2500 m2. Inhabited in the High-Imperial Roman period it did not develop all its splendour until the 4th Century A.D.  and at the end of the 5th century A.D. it was abandoned. It is one of the most important Roman villas in the north-east of the peninsula due to its size and its decoration. It had a square ground plan, 50 m on each side, around a patio with a pond, onto which 50 rooms opened up, which covered a surface area of around 1800 m2. Its polychrome mosaics with varying themes must be highlighted and which were found in 22 of the rooms.  The most outstanding is the mosaic in room 26 that depicts the wedding of Cadmo and Harmonia. Remains of parietal paintings have been discovered, "Opus sectile" decorations with geometric and plant motifs, some fragments of sculptures from the 5thCentury A.D. and numerous ceramic remains, metals, coins, etc.

Buried archaeological remains, it is not currently possible to visit.
